It’s a very effective way to treat a broad area of sun damage,”
--Sean Christensen, MD, PhD, a Yale Medicine dermatologist.
What is Photodynamic Therapy
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a form of phototherapy involving light and a photosensitizing chemical substance, used in conjunction with molecular oxygen to elicit cell death.
PDT is popularly used in treating acne. It is used clinically to treat a wide range of medical conditions, including wet age-related macular degeneration, psoriasis, atherosclerosis and has shown some efficacy in anti-viral treatments, including herpes.
Prevent / Treat Cancer
“We think of these as precursors to skin cancer,” says Dr. Christensen.
Photodynamic Therapy has the effect of recovering the sun damage, decreasing the risk of skin cancer. The FDA has approved PDT can treat:
- actinic keratosis
- advanced cutaneous T-cell lymphoma
- Barrett esophagus
- Basal cell skin cancer
- Esophageal (throat) cancer
- Non-small cell lung cancer
- Squamous cell skin cancer (Stage 0)
We focus on skin treatment, but you will get positive effect while treating your skin problems by PDT.
